Questions to Ask Yourself About Relocation

At one point of our lives or another, we will move to a new city for a new job, to be near family, to pursue a dream, the list goes on and on. Have you thought about all the pros and cons of relocating? It is a big move when you are moving from city to city, especially when you do not know anyone or know the area very well. Though it can also be a gratifying experience. What should you consider before relocation?

If you're relocating for a job:

1. Is this the job you really want?

Don't take a new job in a new city just for the money. Is this a job you can see yourself growing professionally and personally? Does the culture of the workplace match your values? If you are relocating for a job, make sure it is the job you really want, and that it will open doors to align with your goals and vision for your career. If it isn't the job you truly want, then you won't be happy.

2. Is there room for advancement and growth?

When you are relocating for a new job, is there room for advancement? Everyone has goals and dreams they want to reach, but what ladder will you have to climb to get there? Will this job be the right step up the ladder? Will there be leaders in the workplace for you to learn from and leaders to help mold you? Will you be the leader of the workplace?

3. What are the benefits?

Are the benefits greater than your job currently? Is it better pay? Are there more benefits included in the job, like insurance and medical care?

If you have a family:

1. Do you know anyone living there?

It can be very lonely when you first move to a new place, especially if you don't know anyone. Are you willing to put yourself out there and meet new people?

2. Is the relocation the right place for your family?

If you have a family, they are part of the relocation equation. How does this move affect them? Is this a place where you want to raise a family? Is it a community of people? Is it a safe place to live?

3. Where will your kids go to school?

Schools are always an important factor to consider when relocating and moving. What are the schools like? Do your research and ask your real estate agents about the school systems to find out exactly what you need to know about education in the area.

4. Where will your husband or wife work?

If you have significant other, will they be able to find a job?

5. How far are you from family? Can you live far from family?

If you are moving far from family, can you live far from them? It is difficult when you've had help from your parents, and then they are no longer near. Consider what it would be like to drive to see them or to catch a plane to get home.

General:

1. Where will you live?

What neighborhood or place of residence do you want to live in? You will need to familiarize yourself with the area of town you are moving.

2. Can I afford the cost of living?

What does the cost of living look like compared to your current place of residence? Is it higher? Lower? Can you afford it? You don't want to drain your paycheck by paying rent or your mortgage. You want that happy balance.

3. What is transportation like?

Do you need a car? Do you not need a car? If you're moving to a big city, like New York, you probably don't need your car. Are you going to sell it? Maybe you're moving from a big city to a smaller town, will you purchase a means of transportation? How will you get to work? How will you get to the places that your daily life revolves around?
