5 Etiquette Tips for Every Open House

As you start the journey of looking for a home, open houses are a great way to get into properties to see the feel of each space.  As the weekend approaches, open houses are popping up, so here are a few tips to ensure a successful experience!

1. Respect the Current Homeowners

When you are visiting an open house, chances are you will be looking at someone else’s current living space.  A homeowner may request something as simple as removing your shoes before you tour the home.  Go ahead and save yourself some time and grab some comfy socks and slip on shoes.

2. Focus & Be Present

Put all of your attention on the open house and keep your distractions at bay. When you really focus in on the home tour, you may see the property for what it could be – a beautiful spot for you and your family.

3. Introduce Yourself and Sign In

Agents want to know who is visiting an open house, so you will most likely have an opportunity to interact with them.  Be polite and introduce yourself, even if you are just “looking around.”

Some agents also have a sign-in sheet to measure the foot traffic on an open house.  Help them out by signing in, and if you don’t want to be marketed to after the open house, simply do not include your contact information.  However, remember, you may miss out on a dream home if you they have no way of contacting you.

 4. Be Respectful of Other Attendees

Try to wait until other interested parties leave a room before entering to give it your full once over.  Don’t rush others through and don’t feel rushed either if you are in a space while other potential buyers are in the house.

5. Be Honest.

It’s important for the agent to know what you absolutely love about a property, but it is just as important to know about the negatives.  When you let the agent know about things you see that are a potential issue, they can typically fix the problem, or, if it is a situation requiring more effort, alert the sellers to address the problem.

Open Houses are meant to be a fun experience for all buyers and sellers.  They allow you the opportunity to envision yourself and family in a space and provide you with a deeper understanding of what your must-haves are.  Even if you are ready to buy or you’ve never attended one before, visiting an open house is a valuable use of your time.
