The MLK Day of Service, held the third Monday in January, inspires thousands of people to serve others as a measure of goodwill in their communities. Extending a helping hand is one of the easiest ways to commit to service on this day, along with many other ideas, such as:
Sharing your skills:
- Mentor
- Tutor
- Tax preparation assistant
- Interview skills for job applicants
- Resume writing
- Dressing for success
- Create on-line and off-line community discussion forums.
For the children:
- Build a playground
- Devise craft projects for children in hospitals
Provide Assistance to Families and Neighbors:
- Provide yard maintenance to elderly neighbors in your community
- Participate in or create a neighborhood watch program
Community Beautification & Outreach:
- Paint a mural
- Remove graffiti from a building, sign or other structures.
- Reclaim a park or abandoned space for community use
- Serve meals at a homeless shelter
- Bring meals to neighbors, family & friends who are homebound
- Organize a food donation drive
Prepare the Community for Emergency and Crisis Situations:
- Distribute fire safety information and check for working smoke detectors
- Make and distribute disaster preparedness kit.
- Develop your own ideas by considering your community’s needs
- Donate blood
